Madoka and Homura: The Trap of Selflessness

And here it is, our final panel from Anime Fusion 2021. This one was primarily J.C.’s work, so the format is slightly different. It’s also a re-versioning of a panel we presented several years ago directly after the release of Rebellion, so we’ve had some years to stew on that (spoiler: both of us liked it) and now with a new movie on the way it’s opened the door to further speculation.

I hope that these posts have been helpful and interesting to people reading. I also hope that they help to partly explain my delayed episode 1 impressions for the past week and some days; we work really hard to put this stuff together and it ends up taking priority over other things. I’ll definitely be back with more reviews and such now that our (very weird) convention season is effectively over for the year.

The Odd World of “ODDTAXI” – Anime Fusion 2021

I’m back again with more panel materials! This time from our Sunday discussion of the wonderful ODDTAXI anime series. Like our Evangelion discussion, this is mostly a presentation to contain our discussion notes and to distract people from directly looking at our faces the entire time(lol), but it may serve some use to folks who are interested in the series. I’m writing this a day ahead of time so I’m not sure how many people are actually going to show up to this panel (I suspect probably the couple of people we know and that’s it, haha) but I hope it’s of use to some people.

I will note that there is a slide devoted to discussion of major end-of-series spoilers, but we don’t mention them directly, so if you’re worried about any final reveals this shouldn’t take that away from you.

For reference, you can check out my episode reviews of ODDTAXI at the link below:

Anime About Anime 2.0 – Anime Fusion 2021

Good evening (or morning, depending on your time zone). Continuing with the onslaught of panel materials is our presentation from “Anime About Anime 2.0,” which talks about the anime production process as it can be gleaned from watching anime that takes place within that industry. We presented this panel a few years ago but included a few updates and switched things around a bit.

I’d like to note that neither of us is an expert on this topic; we’re both just interested enthusiasts. There are links in the source pages to places where you can learn more in-depth information about anime, its production, and the state of the industry and the staff members. But much like trying to get a sense for the Japanese language through watching anime, if you don’t make it your primary or only source, it can still be helpful for getting a feel for things.

Have you seen any of the series we reference in the panel materials? Let me know!

Neon Genesis Evangelion: A Retrospective

Hello again, friends. Below is the PowerPoint presentation from our Saturday 2:00-3:00 panel “Neon Genesis Evangelion: A Retrospective.” This is mostly just for some visuals to go along with the discussion, so unfortunately there isn’t a ton that’s useful about this outside of the panel itself, but you’re welcome to take it and read our notes (you can tell who wrote which notes because mine tend to be very brief and J.C.’s are much more coherent, heh).

What’s your experience with Evangelion? Have you watched all the movies yet? Are you excited about GKids’s release of the TV series on Blu-ray? Feel free to discuss in the comments 🙂

Shiny New Anime – Anime Fusion 2021

Hi All, I’m scheduling these posts to go up throughout the weekend as J.C. and I present our panels at Anime Fusion 2021. Our first is the ever-enjoyable “Shiny New Anime,” which includes a panel presentation and a hand-out. This should appear on the blog just as our panel is starting (there is an online component this year, so I wanted friends watching at home to at least have access to the handout right away).

Because the video clips will likely only play in a full version of Microsoft PowerPoint (as opposed to the online or Google equivalent), I’ve uploaded the clips into a separate folder if you really want to watch them and aren’t able to within the actual slide show. We chose our featured shows this time around based on both variety and wanting to bring some more focus to series that weren’t as talked-about or got lost in the shuffle (there was a lot of good anime this past year). Anime Fusion 2019 – Panel Materials

Hi all. By this point in the weekend, J.C. and I are finished with our panelist responsibilities at Anime Fusion. We made a conscious decision to cut way back this year, mostly out of a sense of self-preservation. It’s been a year full of personal ups and downs for both of us, and we didn’t want to overwhelm ourselves with convention prep and an overly-ambitious schedule. In any case, below are the panel materials from out one substantial panel this year, Shiny New Anime. If you’ve followed us for a while you’ll like not find much new here; we update the panel on a rolling 12-month basis, so we really just added some stuff from recent anime seasons and took out a few things that were older.

Just a note about the information included in the materials. Firstly, feel free to take these and re-purpose them, just provide credit back here (while the materials themselves aren’t mine per se, it does take a lot of work to compile summaries, cut clips, and watch the series enough to have an opinion of them in the first place). Secondly, and perhaps more importantly, if an anime series you like hasn’t been included, don’t take it as a personal affront; J.C. and I are two people with opinions, and there are many other people in the world who likely share your love for something that we didn’t include. We are just people with limited time who like to shine a spotlight on shows we personally enjoyed, so please take that in the spirit it’s intended.

Let me know if the links are broken or if there are any other issues, and I’ll try to resolve it.

Anime Fusion 2019

Hi all. I know this is a bit (very) belated, but J.C. and I will be at Anime Fusion this weekend. We’ve deliberately elected to put on less programming than usual since our year has been really full and we’ve been busy. Below is where you can see us this weekend!

Friday, October 18th

11:30pm – 12:30am – Anime By Numbers Trivia Game in Panel 2
It’s our anime trivia game where you don’t really need to know anything, just be a good guesser! All answers are numbers, and it’s a team event.

Saturday, October 19th

4:00pm – 5:00pm – Shiny New Anime in Panel 1
Our annual survey of the anime we really enjoyed from the past year. If you attended this at CONvergence there’s not a whole lot of new material, but we’re happy to see you if you decide to attend!

I will likely not be at the convention late on Saturday or at all on Sunday, since I’m trying to save some time for myself (and to post more updates here!), but I suspect J.C. will be there longer (he’s there now, while I’m still at work… don’t tell anyone!)

You can check out the full convention schedule HERE!

Anime Fusion 2018 – Panel Materials

Hi friends. Below are J.C.’s and my panel materials from Anime Fusion, which took place this past weekend. Feel free to take these and use them as you like, but be sure to credit J.C. and/or myself if you do. We put a lot of work into them and want to make sure people can contact us if they have any questions about the content.

Please let me know if any of the links are broken – I’ll be sure to update them.

Anime Fusion 2018 – Come See Us!

Hello, friends. This news is a bit belated, but J.C. and I were invited to be Featured Speakers at this year’s Anime Fusion convention, taking place this weekend in Plymouth, Minnesota! Prepping for the convention has kept me from writing for the past couple of days, so apologies for that. We’ve been attendees and panelists at the con for the past few years, so it was cool to receive this invitation. Obviously pre-reg is closed for the convention, but they have walk-up registration and day passes; even if you’re only free one day you can stop by and say hello!

We’re holding 4 panels over the weekend:

Friday, October 19th

9:30pm Panel 1 – Anime by Numbers Trivia Game – All the answers are numbers, and anyone can play! It’s a game that values logical guessing over exact factual knowledge; teams work together to come up with their best answers. And of course there are also prizes for the winning team!

Saturday, October 20th

11:30am Panel 1- Women in Anime – Anime features girls and women in a variety of roles. What are the aspects of a great heroine? What are some ways anime could improve its portrayal of women? What are some of your favorite characters? This discussion is meant to provide some tools to think critically and recognize the strengths and weaknesses in how women are featured in anime and other media.

3:30pm Panel 2 – Shiny New Anime – Our annual run-down of some of the great anime that’s come out in the past year (since last year’s convention). It’s our goal to show great clips, feature lively discussion, and present good anime in all its variety so that every audience member has something new to go watch. There’ll be handouts to take home, too!

Sunday, October 21st

11:30am Panel 3 – Visual Storytelling – Great anime doesn’t always need subtitles. Watch and discuss some of the best uses of frame, expression, and other visual cues creators use to tell stories without dialogue.

Again, if you’re in the area I hope you’ll drop by and say hello! If you’re not in our area or aren’t able to come to the convention, I’ll be posting my panel materials here after the convention.
