Madoka and Homura: The Trap of Selflessness

And here it is, our final panel from Anime Fusion 2021. This one was primarily J.C.’s work, so the format is slightly different. It’s also a re-versioning of a panel we presented several years ago directly after the release of Rebellion, so we’ve had some years to stew on that (spoiler: both of us liked it) and now with a new movie on the way it’s opened the door to further speculation.

I hope that these posts have been helpful and interesting to people reading. I also hope that they help to partly explain my delayed episode 1 impressions for the past week and some days; we work really hard to put this stuff together and it ends up taking priority over other things. I’ll definitely be back with more reviews and such now that our (very weird) convention season is effectively over for the year.

The Odd World of “ODDTAXI” – Anime Fusion 2021

I’m back again with more panel materials! This time from our Sunday discussion of the wonderful ODDTAXI anime series. Like our Evangelion discussion, this is mostly a presentation to contain our discussion notes and to distract people from directly looking at our faces the entire time(lol), but it may serve some use to folks who are interested in the series. I’m writing this a day ahead of time so I’m not sure how many people are actually going to show up to this panel (I suspect probably the couple of people we know and that’s it, haha) but I hope it’s of use to some people.

I will note that there is a slide devoted to discussion of major end-of-series spoilers, but we don’t mention them directly, so if you’re worried about any final reveals this shouldn’t take that away from you.

For reference, you can check out my episode reviews of ODDTAXI at the link below:

Anime About Anime 2.0 – Anime Fusion 2021

Good evening (or morning, depending on your time zone). Continuing with the onslaught of panel materials is our presentation from “Anime About Anime 2.0,” which talks about the anime production process as it can be gleaned from watching anime that takes place within that industry. We presented this panel a few years ago but included a few updates and switched things around a bit.

I’d like to note that neither of us is an expert on this topic; we’re both just interested enthusiasts. There are links in the source pages to places where you can learn more in-depth information about anime, its production, and the state of the industry and the staff members. But much like trying to get a sense for the Japanese language through watching anime, if you don’t make it your primary or only source, it can still be helpful for getting a feel for things.

Have you seen any of the series we reference in the panel materials? Let me know!

Neon Genesis Evangelion: A Retrospective

Hello again, friends. Below is the PowerPoint presentation from our Saturday 2:00-3:00 panel “Neon Genesis Evangelion: A Retrospective.” This is mostly just for some visuals to go along with the discussion, so unfortunately there isn’t a ton that’s useful about this outside of the panel itself, but you’re welcome to take it and read our notes (you can tell who wrote which notes because mine tend to be very brief and J.C.’s are much more coherent, heh).

What’s your experience with Evangelion? Have you watched all the movies yet? Are you excited about GKids’s release of the TV series on Blu-ray? Feel free to discuss in the comments 🙂

Shiny New Anime – Anime Fusion 2021

Hi All, I’m scheduling these posts to go up throughout the weekend as J.C. and I present our panels at Anime Fusion 2021. Our first is the ever-enjoyable “Shiny New Anime,” which includes a panel presentation and a hand-out. This should appear on the blog just as our panel is starting (there is an online component this year, so I wanted friends watching at home to at least have access to the handout right away).

Because the video clips will likely only play in a full version of Microsoft PowerPoint (as opposed to the online or Google equivalent), I’ve uploaded the clips into a separate folder if you really want to watch them and aren’t able to within the actual slide show. We chose our featured shows this time around based on both variety and wanting to bring some more focus to series that weren’t as talked-about or got lost in the shuffle (there was a lot of good anime this past year). GalaxyCon Minneapolis – Panel Materials

Hi everyone! We had a great time at the inaugural GalaxyCon Minneapolis, and appreciate that they allowed us to run some of our anime programming there. Below are my panel materials from Shiny New Anime. There are only minor differences between this version of the panel and the one that we gave at Anime Fusion, but I was able to swap a couple of things out and added in a clip for Carole & Tuesday, which I was able to watch in the interim (well, the first half at least… thank you, Netflix).

Feel free to download these, share them, and enjoy them. If you re-purpose them in any way, please provide me credit. While I obviously don’t create the anime that are featured in the presentation, I do write up my own descriptions, put together the slide presentation, and cut all the clips which can get time-consuming! Mostly I just want to share my love and enjoyment of anime with the community, though, which is why I offer this stuff with pretty much no questions asked.

Anime Central 2019 – Women in Anime

Hi folks. As is my way, I’m making my panel materials available here for those who could either not attend our panel, or for those who’d like access to our supplemental materials (links, bibliography, etc.). You can download the PowerPoint presentation below:

Women in Anime – ACen 2019

For those who have been following for a while, there are no big differences between this version of the presentation and previous ones. However, there are a couple more links and we included some discussion items that came up during previous iterations of the panel. We had a little bit longer of a time frame this time, too, which was nice.

Anime Detour – Panel Materials

Hi all. Linked below are panel materials for many of our panels this year. I will make a post later with actual convention reactions, but since people have already been looking for these links and such I wanted to get this post up as soon as I was able. If any of the links are dead, please shoot me an email at jessi@s1e1.com and I’ll do what I can to fix it.

Feel free to use these for informational purposes. If you use these materials to create/enhance your own presentations, please credit “Jessi Silver” and “J.C. Horvath” (these took us a lot of work to put together).

Anime Fusion 2016 – Panel Materials

Hi everyone. This weekend I attended Anime Fusion 2016, a small anime convention local to the Twin Cities area. J.C. and I presented two panels at the convention – “Anime about Anime” and “Shiny New Anime.” The panel materials are presented below.

“Anime About Anime” was focused on anime series and OVA’s that actually talk about or focus on animation production. It presents a very high-level and non-specific look at how anime is made using clips from these anime. The majority of what we talked about can be found in the notes on the PowerPoint presentation. I believe that they should be viewable in PowerPoint Viewer and perhaps Open Office, though I have not tried that one. Apologies for some of the clips which contain some wack subtitles; In some cases I had to convert video from soft-subbed downloaded video, which is always iffy (if I had taken more time I would have ripped my own DVDs, but constructing the presentation took longer than expected). A special thanks to Washi’s Blog and Sakuga Blog, where I took a few of my extra examples.

PowerPoint Presentation

“Shiny New Anime” is, of course, our recurring panel focusing on anime from the last year that we watched and liked. It doesn’t include every single thing that I watched, just things that we wanted to recommend and discuss. It is also not comprehensive, as there were some very popular things from the last year that just didn’t hit me right. Please don’t take this as a judgment on anyone’s tastes, just a judgment on the anime itself as seen through my eyes and experience as a fan and consumer, as well as a reality check on how much time I have to devote to watching anime each season 🙂

The PowerPoint presentation itself is very large (600mb or so) because it contains some very large videos. I may upload each clip separately if there is some interest. The accompanying handout is usually what people like to have on hand, so I’ve uploaded that as well. The markings next to show titles are indicative of either the series we have clips for (*) or those we really wanted to discuss (++) or intended to discuss if time allowed (-). One other thing worth mentioning is that this is an incremental update to the presentation of this panel we did at Anime Detour 2016 – basically an update of 6 months/2 anime seasons.

Handout

Please feel free to share these things around and use them how you like. If you plan to use them, in whole or in part, for a presentation you’re doing somewhere, just let me know. It is a lot of hard work to put this stuff together (I took the week off of work prior to the con in order to assemble it all and used a good majority of that time!), as well as to present it to an audience.
